This book examines and compare two elections in Indonesia – the last new order election in may 1997 under the authoritarian government, and the first free election in post-Suhato era in June 1999 – making an important contribution to our understanding of the demise of the new regime. By exploring a mix of local, cultural, national and political perspectives on these elections, the contributors highlight how intense political rivalries on a local level in the 1997 election were surprising similar to the elections under the reform-minded government in 1999.
