The Human Elements of Enviromental Change: Life Stories of Four Enviromental Changemakers in Indonesia
he rising incidence of extreme weather, increasing global temperatures, and the loss of forests and animal species present major challenges that are difficult to fully comprehend and address. Although solutions often appear simple, progress has remained limited. Traditionally, we have relied on charismatic figures to explain the causes of environmental damage, why it matters, and what actions should be taken. Today, the media continues to search for new individuals to help make sense of each emerging environmental crisis.
In this book, Dr. Irawan highlights Indonesia’s experience in significantly reducing deforestation over the past decade. Through the stories of four Indonesian environmental leaders, the crucial role of individuals in driving positive environmental change is explored. The book also emphasizes that building an environmentally healthy society does not depend on just one or two prominent figures, but rather on the collective contributions of many individuals with different roles, functions, and expertise.
To confront the increasingly complex global environmental crises, we must move beyond reliance on so-called “green heroes.” Instead, the focus should be on strengthening the competence of individuals so that they can contribute to environmental change across all areas of society.
