Indonesia: Social and cultural revolution
In Indonesia: Social and Cultural Revolution, Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana presents what he describes as “a contemplation of Indonesian life.” Written in the form of essays rather than a systematic sequence of chapters, the book focuses on three central themes. First, it examines Indonesian culture and its adaptation to the modern world. Second, it bears autobiographical elements, as the author writes in a personal manner and draws upon his own experiences to illustrate his ideas. Third, and most significantly, Alisjahbana’s close and long-standing association with Soekarno and his participation in many of the events described lend authority to his reflections on the complex course of Indonesian politics before and after independence.
Blending cultural analysis, personal reflection, and political commentary, the book offers insight into Indonesia’s social transformation and the intellectual challenges of nation-building in the twentieth century.
